Artist, Writer & Atelier

For over five decades, South African artist Louis Jansen van Vuuren has followed an unshakeable creative impulse—one that began in his childhood in Middleburg, Mpumalanga and has carried him across continents, mediums, and moments of profound artistic discovery. From his first solo art exhibition at seventeen to his life today at his atelier in the French countryside with his partner Hardy Olivier, his journey as a contemporary painter has been one of colour, instinct, and the deep conviction that art and life are inseparable. Through painting, poetry, and an unwavering commitment to his artistic vision, Louis has built a body of work that speaks to the serendipitous beauty of a life devoted to creative expression.

Exhibitions

Louis Jansen van Vuuren’s paintings have been exhibited extensively throughout South Africa and internationally, from early gallery successes in his home country to contemporary art exhibitions across Europe and beyond. Each exhibition has been a chapter in an evolving conversation between the artist and his audience—a dialogue built on colour, texture, and the deeply personal narratives embedded in his canvases. Whether showing in intimate gallery spaces or international art fairs, this celebrated South African contemporary artist approaches each opportunity with the same curiosity and commitment that defined his very first solo exhibition in Middleburg over fifty years ago.

Writing

Images and text have always fascinated Louis Jansen van Vuuren. He believes the creative impetus to write and paint comes from the same place. Since his student days at Stellenbosch University, he has incorporated letters, words, typography, and freeform written sentences into his paintings – visual language merging with painted gesture. In 2010, his first anthology of poetry, Termpermes, was published, marking his debut as a published poet and writer. The collection includes five poems written decades earlier, pieces that had lived quietly alongside his visual art, waiting for their moment. For this South African artist, writing and painting are inseparable expressions of the same creative force – both reach toward what cannot be fully articulated but must nonetheless be said.
