For over five decades, South African artist Louis Jansen van Vuuren has followed an unshakeable creative impulse—one that began in his childhood in Middleburg, Mpumalanga and has carried him across continents, mediums, and moments of profound artistic discovery. From his first solo art exhibition at seventeen to his life today at his atelier in the French countryside with his partner Hardy Olivier, his journey as a contemporary painter has been one of colour, instinct, and the deep conviction that art and life are inseparable. Through painting, poetry, and an unwavering commitment to his artistic vision, Louis has built a body of work that speaks to the serendipitous beauty of a life devoted to creative expression.
He studied art and design at Stellenbosch University, winning awards and scholarships along the way. But more than the accolades, it was the people who shaped him during those years—Professor Otto Schröder, Alice Mertens, Dr. Bows—mentors who saw something in him and pushed him further. “My life has always held a serendipitous element,” Louis says. “People inspired and supported me in the quest of becoming an artist.”
Since that first exhibition decades ago, Louis has shown his work throughout South Africa and internationally. His paintings often weave in text and typography, merging visual and written language in ways that feel immediate and personal. In 2010, he published Termpermes, his first collection of poetry, expanding his creative practice beyond the canvas. More books followed—memoirs, collaborations, narratives about place and identity. For Louis, painting and writing have always come from the same impulse.
Today, he lives with his partner, Hardy Olivier, at their home in the French countryside. His practice continues to evolve, guided by the same conviction that has carried him for over fifty years: art and life are inseparable.
